There are no discount product keys so if you buy one you're throwing away your money. As long as the underlying license you originally upgraded or that came with WIndows 10 is retail and not factory preinstalled or builder's OEM, then it can transfer since Upgrade inherits the rights and restrictions.
It is possible to do yourself if you'd previously signed in with your Microsoft account and it linked to the Digital License as shown in Status at top of the Activation Settings page. Then when you change motherboard, you'd sign in again and run the Troubleshooter.
So that's your best bet. If not you'll need to contact Microsoft Support, asking for Activation help, then keep asking for an agent. I hope this helps. I purchased this key for my friend to use with his PC we just built. Used with the windows installation software from a USB and we typed in the key, and it was accepted. Then the computer rebooted and because we hadn't removed the USB drive, it loaded the installation program again. We removed the drive and Windows 10 loaded like normal for the first setup, but he keeps getting the message that his copy of windows isn't genuine.
I don't know if the key we purchased isn't a good one, or if we messed up when we rebooted after the install was supposedly complete. Maybe after we used the key it was no longer valid and we lost it after the reboot?
Any help would be appreciated. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question Report abuse.
